Global warming is a matter of concern for everyone today. However, incremental changes can produce a large effect against that. Under such circumstances, we cannot keep on waiting for the government to be instrumental for each and every improvement, citizens also can do a lot. Exactly that has recently been verified by the action of communities in Delhi.
Nowadays unbearably hot environment is a health peril for everyone, especially those who are working outdoors. Rickshaw pullers, street vendors, and construction workers risk themselves every day to earn a living under the scorching sun, with prolonged exposure to unbearable heat.
With a view to combating the situation, communities across Delhi have joined hands to stand strong against the heat. They are setting up cooling points (centres), which are not only to utilise the opportunity to help one another but also to disseminate a powerful message that extreme heat cannot dampen the spirit of Delhi.
Greenpeace has been in action on Delhi roads along with its allies – the National Hawker Federation and Basti Suraksha Manch. Together, they have been able to set up cooling points at multiple locations across the city. During the first phase of their initiative, nine cooling points have been established, and one community tap has been repaired. These cooling points are not only serving as places for people to hydrate themselves but also acting as community hubs – where people are celebrating their togetherness and resilience in facing the extreme heat.
A few songs also have been composed on experiences of dealing with Delhi’s harsh summer and shared. Now people are coming together to spend quality time with one another.
Not only in Delhi, such initiatives are needed at all our cities. Thanks to Greenpeace for their noble initiative. The organization bears a history of multiple campaigns and actions for the causes of human benefit. They still have plan to set up 28 more cooling points across Delhi, each costing around Rs. 5,000.
